Peak Cellars is located on a 7-acre property in Lake Country, and is home to our Goldie Road Vineyard. Wine isn’t the only thing the property produces; the half-acre organic vegetable garden and two greenhouses supply the highest quality fruits and vegetables for the Garden Bistro.
We are looking for a Bistro Gardener to join our incredible team of wine and food lovers.
Role type: Seasonal, full-time, hourly
Scope:
Reporting directly to the Executive Chef, the Bistro Gardener will be responsible for planning, sourcing, cultivating, and harvesting produce from the bistro garden and greenhouses, as well as managing on-site beekeeping operations. This role focuses on supporting the farm-to-table program with sustainable and organic practices, while maintaining healthy bee colonies to enhance pollination and honey production.
- Garden & Greenhouse Management:
- Plan and decide on crops to grow, including vegetables, herbs, fruits, berries, and edible flowers, in collaboration with the Executive Chef.
- Source high-quality seeds, seedlings, and plants suitable for the Okanagan climate.
- Maintain and manage seasonal planting schedules to ensure consistent supply for the bistro.
- Cultivate and care for crops, ensuring optimal growth and health.
- Perform routine tasks such as weeding, watering, pruning, and mulching.
- Maintain optimal growing conditions in the greenhouse, including monitoring temperature, humidity, and pest control.
- Beekeeping Operations:
- Manage and care for bee colonies, including regular hive inspections, feeding, and ensuring hive health.
- Harvest and process honey and other bee products for use in the bistro and retail.
- Monitor for pests, diseases, or other threats to hive health and apply eco-friendly solutions.
- Harvesting & Supply Coordination:
- Harvest produce, fruit, berries, and edible flowers at peak ripeness and deliver them to the kitchen team in a timely manner.
- Maintain a well-organized planting, harvesting, and honey collection schedule to ensure a consistent supply throughout the growing season.
- Sustainability & Quality Control:
- Implement organic and sustainable farming and beekeeping practices to align with Peak Cellars’ environmental values.
- Monitor plant and bee health, addressing any issues promptly and proactively.
- Collaboration with the Executive Chef:
- Work closely with the Executive Chef to determine seasonal planting priorities and quantities based on menu requirements.
- Provide regular updates on garden performance, upcoming harvests, and seasonal availability to assist with menu planning.
Qualifications:
- Proven experience in gardening, greenhouse management, and beekeeping (2+ years preferred).
- Strong knowledge of cultivating vegetables, herbs, fruits, berries, and edible flowers, including organic growing practices.
- Familiarity with sourcing seeds, seedlings, and plants for optimal yields.
- Experience in greenhouse operations and systems, such as irrigation and climate control.
- Practical experience in beekeeping, including hive management and honey extraction.
- Passion for fresh, high-quality produce and sustainability.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to work independently and manage schedules effectively.
- Physically capable of performing gardening and beekeeping tasks, including lifting, bending, and working outdoors in various weather conditions.
Compensation:
- Compensation: $22 - $25hr based on experience
